Set Your Plants Up for Success
Healthy plants start with healthy beds. Before you put new flowers or shrubs in the ground, the soil needs to be right. Old weeds need to come out. Edges need to be defined. The soil might need some help.
Bed preparation is all the work that happens before planting. It's not glamorous, but it makes the difference between plants that just survive and plants that thrive.
What Bed Prep Includes
- Edging: We cut a clean, defined edge between your bed and lawn
- Weed Removal: We pull existing weeds, roots and all
- Dead Plant Removal: We take out anything that didn't make it
- Soil Turning: We loosen compacted soil so roots can grow
- Soil Amendment: We add compost or other materials if your soil needs help
- Debris Cleanup: We remove rocks, old mulch, and other junk
Coastal Soil Challenges
Marshfield's soil can be tricky. Near the coast, it's often sandy and doesn't hold water or nutrients well. Further inland, you might have clay that gets hard and compacted. We know how to deal with both.
Adding compost and other organic matter helps sandy soil hold water. It also loosens clay soil and improves drainage. Good soil amendment can transform a struggling bed into a thriving one.
Spring or Fall?
Most people think of bed prep as a spring job, but fall is actually a great time too. Prepping beds in fall means they're ready to go when spring arrives. The amendments have time to work into the soil over winter.
We do bed prep as part of both spring cleanup and fall cleanup. Or we can do it as a standalone service whenever you're ready to plant.
After Bed Prep
Once your beds are prepped, they're ready for new plants and fresh mulch. We can handle all of it, or just do the prep work if you want to plant yourself.
"I was fighting weeds in my flower beds for years. They prepped the beds properly, and now I barely have any weeds. Should have done this a long time ago."
"The beds around our house were hard as a rock. They turned the soil, added compost, and now my plants are actually growing. Big difference from before."
